Zildjian, USSBA partner on Indoor Percussion program

ZIP will center its focus on student-oriented philosophies

The Avedis Zildjian Company has joined with the US Scholastic Band Association as the title sponsor for the inaugural year of the USSBA Indoor Percussion season as Zildjian Indoor Percussion (ZIP) Presented by the USSBA takes the floor for the first time this February.

“Zildjian Indoor Percussion events bring a new competitive philosophy, top notch percussion adjudicators and trademark USSBA service to the indoor genre, providing drumline staff members, students and fans a spectacular experience,” said Sean King, Director of the USSBA, in announcing this partnership. “Zildjian’s commitment to percussion and education is legendary and we are proud to be teaming with them on this new initiative to expand our service to young drummers and their instructors throughout the Mid-Atlantic region.”

ZIP kicks-off its first event on Feb. 6 at Upper Darby High School in Upper Darby, Pa., and continues with weekly events throughout the months of February and March. The Zildjian Indoor Percussion Championship will be presented as part of the inaugural USSBA Indoor Championships to be held at Sun National Bank Arena in Trenton, N.J., on April 17.  Click here for dates and locations of the entire ZIP 2010 schedule.

“Zildjian is a proud to sponsor the USSBA in their inaugural year of Indoor Percussion," said Keith Aleo, Director, Education and Orchestral Activities Worldwide. "We are committed to supporting the USSBA in this outstanding program and all their endeavors. Zildjian and the USSBA share a common thread, dedication and devotion to high quality - both in cymbals and education."

USSBA Indoor will feature A/AA/AAA categories serving varying levels of achievement for each unit, from Basic to Intermediate to Advanced.  Performance groups will consist of Marching, Concert and a brand new level, Standstill Battery/Pit. This newest level allows participation by groups who may be challenged by limited resources and rehearsal facilities to participate actively in ZIP.

The competitive criteria created by the USSBA has been crafted from the ground up utilizing experience and input from leaders throughout the scholastic percussion, and specifically the indoor percussion activity.  The philosophy of scoring aligns with the scholastic environment and features a sliding score scale, a positive scoring orientation (eg. no penalties, harsh treatment or national linear scoring scale) and a wide range of achievement categories.
