Forecasts force cancellation of Upper Darby Indoor show

Winter weather advisory prompts decision; debut season pushed back

After nearly a year of preparation, the much-anticipated launch of the USSBA Indoor program scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 6th has been postponed by one week due to an impending snowstorm that threatens to paralyze the greater Delaware Valley region. The location of the first indoor event - Upper Darby High School in Upper Darby, Pa. - falls directly in the path of the storm forecast to begin Friday evening and continuing into Saturday afternoon.

Due to tight schedule concerns for the participating units and the facility, the Upper Darby event will not be rescheduled, but it will kick-off the 2011 USSBA Indoor Season next February.  However, the USSBA season will now debut on Saturday, Feb. 13th at Pennsauken High School in Pennsauken, N.J.

“Unfortunately, we’ve been through this before,” said Sean King, Director of the USSBA, commenting on the weather forecast that seems reminiscent of the excessive rains dealt with during the fall marching band season.

“It appears as if the same weather pattern that began last autumn is still with us, and while our events already are indoors, as compared to the fall, this time we have to take into consideration safety regarding travel conditions, bus availabilities and campus clean-up after such a big storm.”

King concluded, “But make no mistake, this is only a minor setback.  The team will be geared up and ready for action next week in Pennsauken as the newest events take flight in our inaugural season.”

“We are most disappointed for those teams who were to take the floor and be the first-ever USSBA Indoor units,” said Tara-Lee Bryant, who as Local Event Coordinator has been working with each of the USSBA hosts to ensure a smooth launch to their events and the season.  “We are committed to seeing these events be the absolute best they can be for the judges, directors, hosts and most importantly, the students.  A one-week delay will not deter us from putting on a great event for everyone!”

A dozen units are scheduled to perform at Pennsauken High School, according to Tim Gallagher, Event Manager for the USSBA.

“Judges are scheduled and trained. Show boxes packed and prepped as Pennsauken now will go down in the history books as the first-ever site of a USSBA Indoor event. We hope you’ll come out and join us and be part of the action,” Gallagher said.

Performance opportunities remain open for scholastic dance, colorguard and percussion groups during the Indoor 10-week season, including the first ever Championship event to be held at Sun National Bank Center in Trenton, N.J., on April 17th

Using the newly adopted A-AA-AAA classifications, USSBA Indoor is an ideal format for not only established indoor programs, but for novice groups, as well.
