March 20th Indoor event to feature clinic and Drum Circle

Limited opportunities available for clinic with Savages, Gilligan

The US Scholastic Band Association team is proud to announce the expansion of the March 20th Indoor event at Pequannock Township High School in Pompton Plains, N.J. to include an Indoor clinic tour de force featuring Matt and Amy Savage in Percussion and April Gilligan, Cheryl Gillick, Carl Kreft and Jason Pliska in Color Guard. The show will end with an exciting and fun Drum Circle for everyone in attendance.

The day will kick-off with each group performing their 2010 program, followed immediately by an “Instant Clinic” with the adjudication panel reviewing the group’s performance with the students and staff providing feedback.  After the units have had the opportunity to perform and receive their critique, they will be invited to perform again, this time in competition.

At the conclusion of the 12-unit event, Matt and Amy Savage will lead all of the participants, staff and adjudicators of the day in a drum circle sponsored in part by Remo Incorporated.  Following the Drum Circle, the adjudicators will remain available for further questions and answers from the day’s performers and from any of the guests who may be attending to get more information on creating an Indoor unit.

“We are excited to bring a whole new concept to light here.  The educational benefit of the clinic/competition along with the addition of a fully realized drum circle facilitated by the likes of the Savages, makes for a unique experience and starts to tap into what we as an organization can do in the long run,” said Sean King, Director of the USSBA.

Speaking about the clinic format, Beverly Brahan, Education Director for USSBA Indoor Colorguard said, “This is a perfect event for entry level and intermediate units to get a feel for where their program is and where it is headed. We have some great clinicians who can help groups right here and now, and also can provide insight and tips for those who might be interested in beginning a group for 2011.”

Dennis DeLucia, Percussion Education Director for USSBA Indoor added, “Matt and Amy are a great team to help units no matter their level of skill and development.  We have a lot of first-year units this year, and this Clinic format will be a tremendous opportunity for them to get some developmental feedback as they build their program for the future.”

“We are fortunate to have access to some great adjudicators, who are wonderful clinicians, for this special event in Pequannock on March 20th,” said Tara-Lee Bryant, Local Event Coordinator of the USSBA.  “The day is scheduled perfectly in the middle of the season so that groups of all performance abilities can receive instant feedback on how to improve their program and skills for the remainder of the season and future years.”
