Cedar Cliff to now host Central PA show on Oct. 9th

A snapshot of preparing the USSBA fall schedule

As has been written many times before, the US Scholastic Band Association fall schedule is a huge game of strategy with hundreds, if not thousands, of moving parts to be considered in the final outcome to benefit each of our event hosts and the participating bands.   Here’s a quick story about what happens when forces come together to conspire against the best laid plans.

After many weeks of planning and securing the date which would work best for them to present a great show for the bands of Pennsylvania and Maryland, the Maryland & Delaware State Championships were confirmed earlier this week for Towson University on Cedar Cliff’s first choice of their date for their home show.

“We’ve had a great history with many of the bands in Maryland attending our event, and we want to welcome them back,” said Ben Goldsborough, Director of the Cedar Cliff High School Marching Band.  “When the Towson date was released, we realized in order to accommodate these group’s schedules, we would need to switch to the week prior, making Oct. 9th the date of our event, rather than the previously released date.”

After a series of meetings in Central Pennsylvania, Sean King, Director of the USSBA reflected, “Our friends at Cedar Cliff do an amazing job hosting an event.  Because we’re at the mercy of the college football schedules at many locations, we sometimes have to wait until the absolute last minute to make a call.”

“In Cedar Cliff’s case, we were all systems go with what we thought to be the schedule, however one of those last minute calls made a change necessary.  We can’t thank Ben, Jim and Leslie enough for their flexibility in working with us to reschedule the event to a date that will work for the dozens of groups who have attended Cedar Cliff in the past, and we certainly encourage those groups to register for this event when the schedule is formally released on Monday, March 1,” added King.

Now imagine working with all of these same situations 150 times over!  Putting the annual USSBA schedule together is not for the faint of heart, but in the end the team works very hard to ensure that the needs of the local event hosts, the judges, the boosters and most importantly the bands are taken into consideration to provide the absolute best possible experience for all.

Watch for the USSBA schedule to be released on Monday, March 1st to see where your favorite events will line-up.
