Applications being taken for National Honor Concert Band

MENC seeks student musicians for select positions

The National Association for Music Education is taking applications for select positions for its National Honor Concert Band that will perform during MENC’s Music Education Week in Washington, D.C., June 23-29.

Specifically, MENC has the following positions to fill (other positions might come available if accepted students have schedule conflicts):

  • 2 Oboe/Eng Horn
  • 1 Bassoon
  • 7 Clarinet
  • 1 Alto Sax
  • 1 Tenor Sax
  • 3 French Horn
  • 1 Tuba

Conductor Anthony Maiello, Director of Instrumental Studies at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va., will lead the concert band when it performs at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts during Music Education Week in Washington, D.C. Also performing during Music Education Week will be the MENC Mixed Choir, Orchestra and the National Honor Jazz Band.

To be considered, high school sophomores and juniors must have their teachers be an active MENC member in order to submit their audition materials. A $20 administration fee will be required for each application submitted. Students who are seniors during the 2009-2010 school year are not eligible to apply as most high school graduations take place before the event dates of June 23-29, 2010 and only students associated with a high school may participate.

Teachers must enter www.opusevent.com using MENC ID number to submit application information. After entering www.opusevent.com click “Teacher Overview” to start an application. Audition materials are not required at this time. First applications received will be placed in band openings. All others will be considered as alternates.

Teachers should contact Pierre Beelendorf at pierreb@menc.org or 800-336-3768, Ext. 1, Ext. 230, to confirm their upload and have their student placed.

The cost for a student to perform in one of the National Honor Ensembles is $699 and includes:
