USSBA New England States moves to Bridgeport, Conn.

Conn., R.I., and Mass. titles to be awarded at venerable JFK Stadium

After five consecutive years of weather-impacted State Championship events for the bands of the New England Region, the USSBA has announced the relocation of the 2010 New England State Championships to venerable JFK Stadium in Bridgeport, Conn. for the Oct. 23 event.

As of the end of March, nearly two dozen bands from Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island are already registered for the event.  Bands interested in participating can register by CLICKING HERE.

“Much consideration has gone into all aspects of the New England State Championship and we are pleased to announce JFK Stadium will be the site of this year’s competition,” said Sean King, Director of the USSBA.  “After many meetings and discussions with the bands in the region, it was clear a change had to be made to a venue with an artificial surface.  The Championships are too important to be postponed, or even cancelled, due to field conditions, and after last year we needed to relocate.”

For several years, the USSBA New England State Championships have been impacted by inclement weather while being held on the natural grass field at Veteran’s Memorial Stadium in New Britain, Conn.  In 2009, the event was postponed from its original Saturday date to a mid-week, two night competition, with the second evening being completely canceled due to a day-long rain storm that put the field and surrounding area under a few inches of water in some places.

“Several turf stadiums were evaluated to possibly host the Championships, however we could not lock-in the perfect combination of artificial turf, parking, geography and overall unit and guest experience,” said Tim Gallagher, Event Manager for the USSBA. “In the case of JFK, we’re dealing with a known entity that has hosted USSBA events in the past and has a long history of hosting marching band and drum corps events.”

Additionally, the USSBA has been researching other ways to protect the Championships in the event of adverse weather conditions.  Ideas such as rain dates and back-up locations have not provided the sense of security needed to move forward with a plan that will showcase the New England bands in their best possible light.

“We’re not saying it won’t rain on Oct. 23, but short of a Nor’ Easter we should be able to hold the event and provide the best possible experience to our bands,” King said.

The USSBA New England State Championships are being held for their ninth consecutive year in 2010, featuring bands from Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine.  Registration is open to all competitive and non-competitive bands in the New England region.  To register your band to participate in this multi-state Championship event, please CLICK HERE.
