USSBA Team Visits Virginia; Discusses Fall and Winter Programs

Marching band schedule for Virginia region now available

On a blustery day outside in Allentown, the US Scholastic Band Association team ventured to warmer climes at West Springfield High School outside of Washington, D.C., to discuss plans for the upcoming fall 2010 marching band season and the 2011 indoor program.

Sean King, Director of the USSBA said, “The Listening Tour visit to Northern Virginia marked the fifth or sixth gathering of band directors, judges, booster and instructors to discuss the season past and a look forward to the next school year.  We were happy with the turn-out and genuinely excited about the opportunities for us to expand our services for 2010-2011 throughout the state and especially in Northern Va.”

The two-hour discussion included topics across the board facing music programs of every shape and size from participation to fees to schedules to advocacy.  After an introduction of the USSBA philosophy and approach to music program support, the discussion delved into potential of the USSBA expanding its fledgling indoor activities to the region in 2011.

“A majority of the folks who joined us were from the robust indoor activity throughout Fairfax and Loudoun Counties,” said Courtney Beard, Band Relations Coordinator for the USSBA.  “It was a great opportunity to hear from them on the challenges they face, as well as the successes they have had.”

Plans are still in the tentative phase for 2011 and as more meetings are conducted and the USSBA fields requests from potential participants and hosts.  However, work is continuing toward a preliminary schedule announcement for 2011 as late-May.  “Of course, there are always opportunities for changes in dates and locations, but before the craziness of the fall, we like to give everyone the opportunity to think about their planning,” said Tim Gallagher, Events Manager for the USSBA.

As for the fall, the 2010 Virginia Fall Marching Band Schedule is now open for registration.  As a quick snapshot, here are the events in the Northern Virginia area for this year:

King continued, “There’s a lot unknown about the USSBA in the Northern Virginia area and we hope we took steps to answer some questions.  The schools have welcomed us for many years as we’ve developed events and programs to serve the students and educators in the region.  It is our hope we will be able to continue that tradition as we grow into the future with our approach of ‘students-first’ and first-class communication and service to all of our participants.”

The USSBA would once again like to thank everyone who attended the evening’s discussion, and a special note of thanks to Larry Einuis who served as the gracious host for the evening.  Although his current physical condition prevents him from vocally participating in the discussion, the conversations before and after the evening were greatly appreciated by the USSBA team.
