“With growth of about 10 to 15 percent projected this year in the number of events and participating bands, we want to guarantee the same level of service to all local event hosts, as well as the performing directors, instructors and students,” said Sean King, director of the USSBA. “The only way we can do that is to effectively recruit and train the ever-growing pool of Event Staff team members.”

Event staff roles within the USSBA include Coordinators, Assistant Coordinators and Tabulators. These key positions are crucial in seeing that each and every USSBA event runs smoothly, effectively and stays within the philosophies of being a student-focused event. In all, the USSBA will coordinate more than 140 events in 15 states from September to mid-November.

Details on the USSBA’s Show Staff role include:

The Show Coordinator (SC) represents the USSBA at sanctioned local, state and national marching band events. The SC represents the USSBA and supports the show sponsor, facilitates relations with the judges and participating bands, and oversees the work of the Assistant Coordinator and Tabulator.

The Assistant Coordinator (AC) assists the coordinator with on-site preparations for the event. During the show, the AC is stationed at the band entrance gate and directs bands on/off the field. The AC also distributes score sheets and organizes and monitors the post-show critique.

The Tabulator enters scores and runs reports on a PC, utilizing the USSBA tabulation software program and portable printer. The Tabulator also assists the Show Coordinator during the awards ceremony.

“Our growth will be realized as we continue to expand the number of dedicated individuals to uphold the tradition of excellent customer service and ‘student first’ philosophy we live,” said King. “Should you, or anyone you know - a neighbor, relative, friend or co-worker - be interested in giving a little back to the community by helping the USSBA, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the support of young people, we’d love to hear from you.”
Of particular interest are those people recently retired from a band booster organization.  The perfect case is a booster who has run a marching band contest in the past, but can’t give it up, said King. “We have just the place for them!”

King also notes an interesting trend in the USSBA is the increasing number of husband/wife duos who want to work together on a few fall evenings to support the marching band activity.

“If you know of a friendly, outgoing couple who would like to devote a few hours on weekends in the fall to help great kids do great things, the USSBA will provide them with a great way to give a little something back to the current generation of talented students in the USSBA!
