USSBA Band of the Day: Mount Pleasant High School

Hosting an Oct. 2 USSBA event in Wilmington, Del.

Mount Pleasant High School is hosting a US Scholastic Band Association show on Oct. 2 at Frawley Stadium in Wilmington, Del. Let’s learn a little more about them:

Name of School:  Mount Pleasant High School, Wilmington, Del.

Directors and Staff: Brian Drumbore, Director; Fred Litcofsky, Assistant Director; Alex Reid, Music and Drill Tech; Melissa Crandall, Color Guard Coordinator.

Share the challenges of getting your band program on the field: We face the same challenges as anyone, I guess.  Too little time, too little money!  Getting everyone’s schedule on the same page is difficult with students, so just a lot of advanced planning is necessary.  As everywhere else, money is tight, but we get by.

What's the most rewarding part of it all?  Part 1: Seeing the show to its conclusion each year.  We have a tradition of having a party at the end of the season at the school, where we watch the video from finals, then immediately switch to the very first run-through of the show during band camp.  Yikes….that’s really all that can be said!  But the kids see how far they’ve come throughout the year.  Part 2: Seeing the number of kids that graduate from Mount and pick their college in part based on their music programs, even if they’re not majoring or minoring in music.  That music has become such a part of their lives that they want to continue in college on their own is really amazing.

Tell us about your students. What makes them so terrific?  Mostly that they’re willing to put up with me!  Seriously, their dedication to music and marching band is second to none.

Tell us about your upcoming USSBA show: Oct. 2 at Frawley Stadium in Wilmington.  It’s a great venue for a marching band show.

What makes your USSBA show incredible?  The stadium is great.  The field is perfect, pro-grass, always groomed, etc.  It’s not often you get to do a field show on a baseball field that’s been lined into a football field.  For visitors, there are some great shops and tons of restaurants at the riverfront so I recommend parents come early and wander around for a little bit.

Band of the Day is an occasional feature of the US Scholastic Band Association spotlighting the many wonderful host schools of the Association. Are you hosting a USSBA event and want to be featured as Band of the Day? Email Tara Lee Bryant at tara@yea.org.
