The USSBA Virginia State Championships move to Richmond area

All-new Glen Allen High School to serve as host for 2010 event

Glen Allen High School Stadium is brand new and currently under construction.

After an exhaustive search throughout the state of Virginia, the US Scholastic Band Association is proud to announce the location of the 2010 USSBA Virginia State Championships to be held on Saturday, Oct. 30 will be Glen Allen High School in Glen Allen, Va.

“The team here at the USSBA worked for several months on securing a great facility for the USSBA Virginia State Championships,” said Sean King, Director of the USSBA, in announcing the tenth and final State Championship location for 2010.  “The great folks at Salem Stadium have been wonderful to work with over the past few years, but as the USSBA has continued to grow, we have received requests from across the state for us to put the event in a more geographically-centered location for more bands to attend.”

Glen Allen High School in the suburbs of Richmond does exactly that.  Located approximately 100 miles from Northern Virginia and Virginia Beach and less than 200 miles from the Roanoke/Salem area, the Glen Allen location places the event well within a comfortable travel distance for most bands.  The all-new stadium is 20 rows high and has seating from goal line to goal line, with back-side seating to give bands and spectators a great vantage point for the Virginia State Championships.

“By placing the event at an all-new high school, we are guaranteed of the most modern facilities possible,” said Tim Gallagher, USSBA Events Manager.  “From the photos and research we’ve done, the stadium and venue provide an excellent experience opportunity from warm-up to performance and awards.”

“The USSBA was particularly sensitive to some bands who participate in the VBODA events earlier in the day,” said Courtney Beard. “With the economic conditions facing so many bands, placing the most significant USSBA event in the sate somewhere that is easily accessible by all was very important.”

As of the end of May, a record-number of bands has registered to participate in the Virginia State Championships, with nearly 25 bands already signed up.  There are only 40 performance slots for the day, so bands wishing to participate are encouraged to sign-up as soon as possible to secure their performance opportunity.
