Share the challenges of getting your band on the field.

I think the biggest challenge this year is making sure the funds are raised to provide for the needs of our band.  Due to recent budget cuts, the band parent association has picked up some expenses to help cover some of the costs in running the marching band.  Thankfully, our school budget passed and through working with the Board of Education our band program will continue.

What's been the most rewarding part of it all?

To see the progress they make every week starting in May when our season kicks off at the Memorial Day parade.  Mr. Zuccheri selects music and drills that are challenging for our band members.  We receive many compliments on our shows every year.  Come fall they are prepared for competition!  When cadence sounds – here comes North Warren – they hear the roar of their parents sitting at the 50 yard line!

Tell us about your students. What makes them so terrific?

They take on the challenge and strive for excellence!  They have won two New Jersey State Championship Titles 2007 and 2009 – All Northern States Championship Title in 2000.  As Mr. Z says, “Just believe!” We are very proud of our children, they are well behaved, follow their leaders, and represent our school with great pride!

Tell us about your upcoming USSBA show.

“Music Under the Stars” is being held on Saturday, Oct. 16, and it is a Gold Event with six USSBA judging staff in attendance which will provide scoring and critiques in all areas.  We always try to provide to our attendees a place where they can compete, better their performance levels and receive recognition.  They are all winners in our book!

What makes your USSBA show incredible?

North Warren Regional High School has beautiful fields to house this competition with field lighting, press box and large seating area.  Blairstown is not far from a lot of local schools which helps with busing for school budgets! We serve delicious homemade soups, funnel cakes, baked goods, and a host of grilled items!  This year we are conducting a Cruise Raffle for 7 Days in the West Caribbean for Two!  It sets sail on Jan.23 from Miami, Fla., with a return date Jan. 30!  Tickets are $10each and the winner will be chosen at the Home Show!

Band of the Day is an occasional feature of the US Scholastic Band Association spotlighting the many wonderful host schools of the Association. Are you hosting a USSBA event and want to be featured as Band of the Day? Email Tara Lee Bryant at tara@yea.org.
