Susan ... Cadets ... Life

A special letter from George Hopkins

To our Friends, Donors, Volunteers and Alumni:

Susan Erben, the Director of Development for Youth Education in the Arts, was taken from our world this past Thursday in a senseless accident. Such occurrences have no logical explanation. They certainly appear to be unfair, and to those left behind, there is a massive sense of loss. It all happens so fast.

With no warning.
And no chance to say anything.
Life just ends.

We have had numerous notes, calls and expressions of sympathy. We here at Youth Education in the Arts are grateful for the outpouring of affection and concern.  Before the accident, she was right here, in our office, making calls, searching for support for The Cadets.  We miss her. We miss her so very much!

This Tuesday evening, at the Drum Corp - An American Tradition event at the College of New Jersey, in Ewing, N.J., The Cadets and YEA! will have a short ceremony to honor all that Susan has done for the world and for the mission and students of Youth Education in the Arts.   Funeral arrangements have yet to be announced officially, but you can be sure we will publish all here as soon as they are available.

And as life moves on, with a heavy heart, we here at YEA! are getting back to work at supporting and assisting the development and magnificence of young people. The Cadets are on the road, there are drum corps shows to run, there is money to raise, and there are vehicles to repair, push, and cajole to the next town!

We are back to work and yes, we are back to work with a heavy heart.  But, we have a responsibility to the kids in the Cadets, the bands of the US Scholastic Band Association, and the young people of the Lehigh Valley!

So … we hope all understand. Susan is first in our minds … but our kids are our concern!

We were touched by the spirit of someone so very special. We now need to take that spirit and use it … to make the world a better place for all who follow and all we are fortunate to serve.

Thank you Susan for being a part of YEA! and thanks to all of you for standing by us and supporting the programs of Youth Education in the Arts, including, this 2010 edition of the Cadets.

See you on the road!

FHNSAB!
George Hopkins
