USSBA Band of the Day: Jackson Memorial High School

Preparations underway for USSBA event on Oct. 2 in Jackson

Jackson Memorial High School is hosting a US Scholastic Band Association show on Oct. 2 at Jack Munley Field, Jackson, N.J. Let’s learn a little more about them:

Name of the School: Jackson Memorial High School, Jackson, N.J.

Director(s) and Staff: Bud McCormick - Band Director, Jessie Katona - Asst. Band Director, Guard Advisor - Laurie Barbour Rivera, Mark Figueroa, Angel Rivera

Share the challenges of getting your band program on the field:

Our band marches approximately 160-180 students each year. Transporting and feeding the students can be a real challenge. Performing inside on a rain-out, is really an experience. (Six shows last year!)

What's the most rewarding part of it all?

Seeing our student’s faces at the end of a performance. They really feel great about themselves.

Tell us about your upcoming USSBA show:

Our show has a "tradition" of giving out the LARGEST, amount wise, and size wise - trophies at any show. Our show usually averages 17-21 bands. We have great parent support, and feeding the bands, hosting the bands, is no problem whatsoever. We also have a 1,350 seat auditorium in case it rains.

What makes Jackson Memorial Jaguar Band different?

We really get into our shows. We recently did a Civil War show, where the entire band wore Civil War Uniforms. We recently performed a Phantom of the Opera show where the entire band wore black tuxedos. We really get into what we are doing.

What are your upcoming plans?

This year, the Jaguar Band has purchased US Regulation Army fatigues for the entire band. We are doing a salute to the 35th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War, by bringing back our interpretation of the music from Miss Saigon with some additional surprises in store.
