Warm- up for Champs at the Oct. 30 'A Band Challenge'

Prelim/Final format featured one week before Allentown

Giving Class A bands one more important adjudicated performance before Championships, the US Scholastic Band Association introduces a new event for A bands of the New Jersey, New York, and Connecticut region on Saturday, Oct. 30 as the ‘A Band Challenge’ is scheduled for the Sayreville War Memorial High School in Parlin, N.J. The new event will feature a first-ever prelim/final format - just one week before the Northern States Championships.

“We are pleased to have created a new, fun event for Class A bands to showcase their talents as they peak for the Championships,” said Sean King, director of the USSBA.  “For many years, Class A bands would compete at the State Championships and then have an off-week before the Northern States in Allentown.  With the ‘A Band Challenge,’ bands get another read from a quality panel before they prepare for the season-ending Championships.”

“Adding the interesting prelim/final format allows programs to have a possible two critical reads, complete with a critique to put those final touches on the program for 2010 before Championships,” said Courtney Beard, band relations manager.

“Sayreville is a great location that has been the home to the USSBA New Jersey State Championships for several years, and with great boosters and a turf field, we couldn’t think of a better way to wrap up the regular season before the Championships,” said Tim Gallagher, event manager for the USSBA.
