USSBA Band of the Day: Chopticon High School

Hosting The Chopticon Showcase of Bands on Oct. 9

The Chopticon High School Marching Band is hosting a US Scholastic Band Association show on Oct. 9 at the high school in Morganza, Md. Let’s learn a little more about them:

Name of School: Chopticon High School, Morganza, Md.

Directors and Staff:

Todd Burroughs, Director of Bands
Christina Burroughs, Assistant Director of Bands
Rachel Sparks, Guard Instructor

Share the challenges of getting your band on the field.

It’s the same as every other band program in this country: time and money.  We never seem to have enough of either.  Additionally, it is becoming harder to find techs in our area.  If there are any percussionists around looking for a tech gig, give me a call!

What's been the most rewarding part of it all?

Watching the kids grow during the season.  I always love the “wow” moment at the end of season when they watch the DVD of the last performance of the season and compare it to the parent performance at the end of camp in August.

Tell us about your students. What makes them so terrific?

We are located in rural Southern Maryland and only have three marching band staff members.  Because of this, the students really need to take leadership of the program to help ensure its success.  A significant number of members attend marching band camps during the summer and three march in DCI.

Tell us about your upcoming USSBA show.

We are hosting what we hope will become an annual event known as “The Chopticon High School Showcase of Bands” on Oct. 9.

What makes your USSBA show incredible?

By having a show in Southern Maryland, we are hoping to attract Maryland bands that may not have a history with USSBA.  Maryland, especially Southern Maryland and the Eastern Shore, have many “hidden gem” programs people are not familiar with because they do not have the financial means to travel to Northern Maryland, New Jersey, or Pennsylvania every weekend.  We are hoping to attract these bands for a close to home show.  I believe once they see how the USSBA conducts business compared to other circuits, we can recruit many new members into our organization.  Hopefully, this we lead to even more shows being hosted in Maryland.
