Open letter to fans and alumni of the New Jersey area

Huge 2011 Kick-Off is planned for June 10-12 weekend

In September 2004, Youth Education in the Arts, which includes The Cadets, moved from Hackensack, N.J. to Allentown, Pa. A big move at the time, it occurred to take advantage of a crazy rental deal on a 15,000 square foot building and the chance for stabilization after years of relocation in search of a home that the organization could afford.

Beginning on Memorial Day 2005, The Cadets have returned to North Jersey to participate in area parades in an attempt to maintain connections. However, for the past three years, and again in 2011, the Cadets Spring Training Site is in Johnstown, Pa. The campus is a great facility with dorms and a stadium. It is a perfect location, albeit far from home. The drive from Johnstown, Pa., to Newark, N.J., is six hours.

This distance, and the buses and relocation to North Jersey for Memorial Day cost The Cadets over $8,000. The income from three parades is about $11,000. Plus, as we leave Saturday evening, there is a loss of rehearsal time of 2 ½ days. In short, there has arisen a question about the viability of continuing the practice.

In 2011, The Cadets will not be traveling to New Jersey for Memorial Day Weekend. We WILL be coming to Allentown, to North Jersey and to the Philadelphia area, with a pre-season kickoff presentation the weekend of June 10-11-12. Drum Corps International has asked us not to release the tour but - for the second consecutive year, - I can tell you that The Cadets will not appear in the Northeast until August. Thus making this weekend in June the one chance you have to see the 2011 early version of The Cadets as they bring season #77 to the field.

So, at this juncture, we wanted to let you know about Memorial Day and our logic for not taking the trip. We will of course, have any and all opportunities for you to connect online with the corps and, of course, weekend rehearsals are in South Jersey in Woodstown, N.J., with the exception of the first Audition Camp – Nov. 19-21 - that will be held in Reading, Pa., to take advantage of a larger school.

Stay close to as exciting 2011 Summer Tour details are released in the coming months.
