Cadets auditions continue at Dec. 10-12 camp

Brass musicians, percussionists still sought

The Cadets hold ensemble rehearsal during their Nov. 19-21 Audition Camp in Reading, Pa. Below, George Hopkins addresses the corps.

If you missed the Cadets November Audition Camp, that’s OK! We’re picking back up in December as the corps meets for its second rehearsal of the 2011 season on Dec. 10-12 at Woodstown High School in Woodstown, N.J.

“We had a tremendous turn-out for the first camp in Reading, Pa.,” said Cadets Assistant Director Justin Heimbecker. “Talent came from across the country, and even farther distances - Japan, England, and Canada were in the house!”

As the corps rounds out and solidifies its membership for 2011, auditions will continue at the next camp. In particular, The Cadets seek brass musicians, percussionists, and colorguard performers. Colorguard members do not return to camp until April, but interested applicants may submit a videotaped audition, Heimbecker said.

Brass and percussion musicians interested in auditioning, but cannot attend the December camp should contact Heimbecker directly to discuss options.

For the near 260 applicants who made the trip in November, the experience was terrific, as staff took care to share the philosophies of The Cadets, and teach techniques and skills that could be used as a member, and elsewhere.

For Peter Rekawek of Lancaster, Pa., becoming a Cadet has been a dream since watching the corps as a middle school student.

“They are always focused, on and off the field. It’s amazing to see,” said the 16-year-old baritone player.

Camp included a ‘Welcome Parents’ meeting on Friday night, providing a brief overview to those unfamiliar with the organization. Also, as a special treat, the corps welcomed members of the Reading High School Marching Band into the visual block held Saturday as a short clinic for the students of the hosting school.

The Cadets posted a series of short videos from Audition Camp throughout the weekend, giving parents, fans and alumni an at-a-distance look at what’s taking place during camp. CLICK HERE TO VIEW VIDEO.
