Ellen and Jack Warnzt of York County, Pa., are long-time volunteers of The Cadets.

This beautiful story was submitted by Cadets Alumnus Andy Warntz whose parents introduced him to the activity, and were long-time dedicated volunteers of the corps. Jack and Ellen Warntz have been recognized by The Cadets and DCI for their selfless devotion to the activity, and now are receivers of the prestigious 2010 Jefferson Award of York County for their volunteer work with Grace Lutheran Church in Red Lion, Pa.

Channel 8 in the York/Harrisburg/Lancaster area recently profiled the couple’s work with the church food bank and yard sale ministry. The Cadets congratulate them for this well-deserved honor, and thank them for the years of service they have given the corps.

Anyone who marched with The Cadets from 1985 to 1992 will probably remember Jack and Ellen Warntz.  Jack and Ellen were lifelong drum corps fans and in the early 1980s took their son Andy on summer vacations to places like Whitewater, Wis., Atlanta, Ga., and Philadelphia to watch drum corps shows.

In 1984, they read an article in Drum Corps World about their favorite corps, the Garfield Cadets.  The story was about a food truck accident and that the Garfield Cadets needed donations to help get a new truck.  They sent money to The Cadets which resulted in their name ending up on the Cadets mailing list!  In the fall of 1984 they got a letter from The Cadets asking for volunteer help, so they decided to spend weekends that winter in Tappan Zee, N.Y., cooking for the corps.  They continued to cook at every winter camp and take any vacation time they had to tour with The Cadets each summer from that point till 1992.

During that time, they showed great love and care for the members of the corps and touched many kid’s lives in a positive way.  After eight years they decided their bodies couldn't take it anymore and they retired from volunteering with The Cadets, however, you'll see in this video, that their volunteering still hasn't stopped, they just do it in a different way now!
