USSBA announces Class A National Championships to debut this November

J. Birney Crum to host 90 bands vying to become first ever Class A titlists

Class A bands will now have their own National Championship at J. Birney Crum Stadium in Allentown, Pa.

For five years, Open Class bands from across the country have competed at the National  Championships in Annapolis, Md.  Beginning this fall, 90 A Class bands will have the same opportunity as the USSBA proudly introduces the 2011 Class A National Championships to be held Nov. 12 - 13 at J. Birney Crum Stadium in Allentown, Pa.

“With the increasing popularity we’ve seen with the National Championships in Annapolis over the past five years, the time has come to celebrate the accomplishments of the Class A bands through a National level competition tailor-made to showcase their programs,” said Sean King, director of the USSBA, in announcing the USSBA Class A National Championships.

Participation will be limited to the first 90 bands, regardless of group size, to register to compete to become the first-ever Class A National Champions in their group size.

As part of the creation of the Class A Nationals and an eye to the new economic realities facing us all, the USSBA has restructured the registration fees for this event.  The fee for the National Championships will be a single fee based on the size of the band.  There will not be a ticket requirement for this championship event however bands will be provided optional tickets for sale to their supporters at a commissionable rate, thus providing the bands the opportunity to benefit from ticket sales if they choose.

For fans of the USSBA, you will notice that the National Championships will take the place of the Northern States Championships which have been held in a variety of locations over the past few years, but have settled most recently in the friendly confines of J. Birney Crum Stadium.

As of January, competition is slated to begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 12 with the Group II Championships followed immediately by the Group II Awards Ceremony.  After a short break, the Group IV, V and VI competition will commence with the Awards Ceremony for these Groups concluding by 10 p.m.

Competition will begin at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 13 with the Group I Championships followed closely by the Group I Awards Ceremony.   The Group III Championships will complete the weekend full of marching band excitement at J. Birney Crum Stadium with its Awards Ceremony ending by 9 p.m.

Of note, due to the open enrollment policy for the event, the USSBA may need to make discretionary schedule changes based on group size participation.  These revisions would be made no later than Aug. 1 to not adversely affect bands.

Registration begins this February when sign-ups start for the entire fall marching band season.  Watch for more details on the USSBA Class A National Championships to be posted on the usbands.org website.
