Cadets announce the formation of new Scholarship Fund

Financial assistance in memory of the late Susan Erben

For many years, supporters and fans of the Cadets have asked the administration to create a scholarship fund.  We have been unable to accommodate the request due to our need to raise every possible dollar to support the operations of the corps.

This is still the case ….however, in memory of Susan Erben, and with recognition of the raising costs of membership, The Cadets are pleased to announce the formation of the Cadets Scholarship Fund.

The Cadets Scholarship Fund

The Cadets Scholarship Fund is being created to assist Cadets who may be in need of financial assistance to support their membership with the corps.  The scholarship is open to any member of The Cadets who is accepted into membership for the current year of the award. Example, any member of the 2011 Cadets, returning member or first year member, would be eligible for consideration.

Each year, 75 percent of the scholarship fund balance will be awarded to a select group of Cadets.  Not all applicants will receive a scholarship and the committee is not required to award a scholarship each year.  It is the responsibility of the scholarship committee to discuss and choose the recipients each year who might receive assistance to support their being a member of The Cadets.

No member will be awarded more than $500 or less than $100.

Each applicant will be asked to submit the following materials:
  • The scholarship application
  • A letter explaining to the committee why The Cadets play an important part in their lives.
  • Three references, including a past teacher, an employer or professional relationship, and anyone else who might speak to the character of the applicant.

There may also be an interview of the applicant if necessary per the request of the committee. This interview can be via conference call or in person.

The Scholarship Committee

The Scholarship Committee will consist of 3-5 members selected by the Director of the Cadets.

Applications and more details about the application process will be released in February for the 2011 season.

Ms. Susan Erben

This scholarship is in memory of the late Ms. Susan Erben.  Ms. Erben marched in the corps in 1978 and was involved with the corps, administratively, from the 1980 to 2010.

Susan spoke frequently of her wish to have a fund created for the support of members who needed assistance and although the fund was not created in her lifetime, The Cadets launch this fund in her lasting memory.
