USSBA announces Western States Championships for Arizona

Northern Arizona University to host Oct. 29 event

The USSBA will hold the first ever Western States Championship at the J. Lawrence Walkup Skydome in Flagstaff, Ariz.

For the past several seasons, the US Scholastic Band Association has been expanding to host successful events in Nevada and California, and now the USSBA is excited to bring its unique approach to the marching band activity to Arizona by holding the first-ever USSBA Western States Championship at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Ariz., on Saturday, Oct. 29.

“After positive discussions with Daniel Schmidt, director of bands at Northern Arizona, we are proud to announce the newest date on our schedule as we expand to serve the bands of Arizona, Nevada, California and beyond,” said George Hopkins, CEO of YEA! and founder of the USSBA.  “We look to partnering with Dan and the team at Northern Arizona to bring our scholastic-based scoring system and penalty-free environment to bands in the Southwest and give them an experience to advance their programs, no matter their skill level.”

Sean King, director of the USSBA said, “The Northern Arizona University facility in Flagstaff is positioned well to bring bands from across Arizona as well as adjoining areas of Las Vegas, Nevada and even California, to take part in a championship level event.”  King added, “We’re eager to share the USSBA’s user-friendly philosophy with the great bands of the West!”

For bands new to the USSBA, competition will be held in six group sizes (Group I-VI) based on total band membership and two classes commensurate with their level of achievement.

A Class competition is for intermediate band programs that are less competitive, while Open Class for advanced band programs that are more competitive.  The USSBA also features a Festival class for non-competitive bands who wish to either participate in the showcase events that the USSBA provides, or to receive feedback and an overall rating.

A seven judge panel comprised of top adjudicators from across the country will evaluate each program in six different captions including: Music Individual, Music Ensemble, Visual, Overall Effect (2), Percussion and Colorguard.  Caption awards will be presented in each Group and Class.

An exclusive feature of every USSBA event is the post-show critique for all bands by the adjudication panel, reviewing the band’s Western States performance as well as ideas on how to improve the overall band’s program for the future.

Registration for the 2011 USSBA Western States Championships is $400 and will be open in late February to all bands.
