We’re going to the beach – Pennsauken, N.J., style!

The US Scholastic Band Association kicks off its Indoor season on Saturday, Feb. 12 as nearly 15 colorguard, percussion and dance groups hit the performance floor – some for the first time this winter!

beachThis weekend’s event themed ‘A Day at the Beach’ launches the exciting 10-week season that welcomes thousands of young performers to shows across the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast. For the next 10 weekends leading up to the USSBA Indoor Championship in Trenton, N.J., on April 16, groups will spin, drum, jazz run, toss and more! All to entertain and glow in the thrill of live performance!

“In 2010 the USSBA set out to provide Indoor groups a place to learn, perform  and grow in a risk and penalty-free environment,” said Sean King, director of the USSBA. “As we prepare to hold our first event in the second season, we are thrilled to welcome back our returning units and those who are ‘test driving’ the USSBA, so to speak, to see what we’re all about. We think they will like what they experience.”

Pennsauken High School opens the season’s festivities and features 11 colorguard and three drumlines at their “Day at the Beach” event. Given the relentless winter weather in the region, show planners agreed it would be refreshing and fun to theme the day to escape the winter blahs.

“Expect some surprises,” said Tara Lee Bryant, show host coordinator. “It may be winter outside, but inside Pennsauken High School, we’ll be at the beach!”

“Pennsauken will be a great chance for us to take the wraps off of our new percussion sheets, designed exclusively for the USSBA to focus on today’s percussion performer, no matter the level of skill or achievement,” said  Rich Hammond, percussion education director. “If you compete in another circuit and have an open date, or are just looking for a great place to get some super feedback, Pennsauken is the place to be.”
