Four Education Workshops announced for band students

Register for training sessions for drum majors, colorguard, percussion and freshmen

Athletes do it.  Dancers do it.  So why shouldn’t marching band and colorguard members do it?

Beginning this May, band members can begin their own off-season training program with some of the marching activity’s best and most accomplished educators, instructors and designers.

High school and middle school students are invited to start the upcoming 2011-2012 marching band and indoor seasons this spring as The Cadets and US Scholastic Band Association join to present sessions specifically designed for drum majors, colorguard performers, percussionists in May and a new Freshmen series slated to debut in August.

The “For only Series” powered by The Cadets and USSBA consists of four workshops exclusively focused on engaging four different areas of the marching band, all with a distinctive Cadet theme and approach which has been successful not only in achieving the corps’ nine World Championships, but in training hundreds of music educators and thousands of young people during the past three decades.

For Drum Majors Only
Saturday, April 30 - Woodstown High School – Woodstown, N.J.
Cost per student:  $69

Current and alumni drum majors of The Cadets will present clinics focused on the skills and expertise necessary to lead a marching band from the band room to the podium.  With an emphasis on conducting, leadership and communication skills, this workshop is a must for anyone auditioning for a drum major position or looking to improve their skills for the coming year.

For Colorguard Only
Saturday, May 7 – Location to be determined in New Jersey
Cost per student: $49

Study with April Gilligan (The Cadets), Katie Hopkins (Marian Catholic High School, The Cadets), Ronnie Bynum (The Cadets) and Louis Hellinger (West Orange High School) for this one-day intensive skill building session.  Concentration for the day will be on equipment and dance for performers, while instructors and designers will have opportunities to discuss the creative process and choreography.

For Percussion Only
Saturday, May 14 – Location to be determined in New Jersey
Cost per student: $79

A first-time ever clinic for percussionists and instructors will feature The Cadets Percussion Caption Supervisor and Arranger Colin McNutt (2008-2011) and his special guests to discuss their personal philosophies and approaches to the marching percussion activity indoors and outdoors, while putting sticks and mallets in the hands of middle and high school players for a day full of drumming.

For Freshmen Only
Aug. 15-18 - Four locations to be determined: Connecticut, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Maryland
$39 per student

For the first time ever, incoming ninth graders are invited to a ‘Boot Camp’ to learn the basics of marching, music and movement.  A student’s first band camp will be a breeze after completing an in-depth day-long clinic of learning “everything you need to know” before members ever take their first step as a member of their high school band.  A special “For Freshman Parents Only” session caps the day. All attendees registered in advance will receive a special Band Camp Survival Kit.
