For Percussion Only on May 14 brings Cadets current and former staff to band students.

In a first-of-its-kind event, the 9-time World Champion Cadets and US Scholastic Band Association (USSBA) are presenting “For Drummers Only,” an interactive clinic on Saturday, May 14 featuring the two generations of Cadets arrangers, composers and instructors Tom Aungst (89-08) and Colin McNutt (08-11) in a day-long workshop.

Current high school and college drummers and instructors, arrangers and composers are invited to listen, learn and play along with Aungst and McNutt at Bridgewater-Raritan High School in Bridgewater, NJ from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“The focus of the ‘For Drummers Only’ program is to bring together the creators of The Cadets legacy of percussion excellence and give high school students and their instructors an opportunity to study with the originators of the unique Cadet approach to percussion which has resulted in DCI World Championship titles and percussion awards over the past three decades,” said Eric Kitchenman, director of educational outreach for YEA! and the USSBA.

The day will begin at 9 a.m. with an overview of the ‘Who, What and Why’ of marching percussion with Aungst and McNutt providing insight on each battery instrument.  A 75-minute session entitled ‘Technique, The Art of Playing’ wraps up the morning block before all attendees break for lunch, including a Meet and Greet with the clinicians.

The afternoon schedule includes two sectional break-outs when participants will be divided into small groups according to skill level and instrument.  After the second sectional break-out session, groups and individuals will take part in a 90-minute block of performances focusing on blending the ensemble, group and individual players.  A grand finale along with awarding of prizes and other gifts caps off the full day of drumming at 5 p.m.

The For Drummers Only is presented in part by Yamaha Corporation of America, Band & Orchestral Division, Avedis Zildjian Co., Vic Firth Inc. and Remo Inc.

Registration is $79 and includes a pair of Vic Firth Signature Sticks.  You can register for the “For Drummers Only” clinic at www.yea.org/student.  For more information, please call Melissa Barlow at (610) 821-0345, Ext. 115, or by email at  Melissa@yea.org.
