Fantastic Atlanta regional performance, with some logistical hitches

Angel and Demon Diary: Cadets daily updates from the road

102_8465.jpgThe Cadets had their best show of the season in Atlanta last night, complete with bashed-in baritone, new guard uniforms, banners and tarps. The dome environment didn’t faze the corps at all; they attacked the show with energy and passion, and a lot of the staff got choked up at some point. The members were all smiles in the tunnel as the staff high-fived each other.

The Cadets earned a 94.10, but the crowd’s reaction suggested that they expected a higher score from the judges. It’s so exciting to see the performers connecting with their audience in such a powerful way.

Unfortunately, after the high of the great performance began to fade, things started to go wrong. The food trucks aren’t allowed to cook in the lots at the George Dome, and the pizza that should have arrived at 11:00 p.m. showed up at midnight. Given, the parking/exiting situation at the Dome made it extremely difficult for an unsuspecting deliveryman to navigate through 26 drum corps’ worth of trucks and buses.

Once everyone’s hunger was satisfied, another ordeal continued. The guard bus had unexpectedly died before the show, so the color guard loaded it with everything they didn’t need for the performance and squeezed onto the other buses to get to the show downtown. After the show, they piled into every available nook and cranny again, and the entire convoy drove the hour back to the housing site to meet a temporary charter bus.

Back at Sandy Creek High School, the color guard waited until almost 3:00 a.m. for their new bus to arrive; then they loaded their things, and the corps traveled to York, South Carolina. We pulled in around 7:20 this morning. A new bus will be arriving here any minute and will hopefully last for the duration of tour.

It’s a quick rehearsal day today before the third big show in a row. Tonight the top eight will go head-to-head once again at another Tournament of Champions competition, this time in Rock Hill, South Carolina. The Cadets will rage Rock Hill at 9:40 p.m.
