Director of Development

Job Description

The director of development is responsible for developing and implementing the fundraising strategy for Youth Education in the Arts and all related programs. Reporting to the director of operations, the director of development is responsible for achieving the organization's development and fundraising goals. This includes managing major donor relationships, alumni relations, direct mail and annual campaigns as well as Web and email based fundraising and fundraising events.


  • With senior management, create and implement annual development plan, including annual giving, major gifts, planned giving and fundraising events.
  • Solicit contributions.
  • Train and lead other staff to support fundraising and marketing efforts
  • Cultivate and nurture relationships with current and potential corporate, foundation, alumni and individual donors, including posting gift stewardship.
  • Assist in the preparation of grant proposals and reports
  • Develop and manage the fundraising capacity of the board of directors
  • Manage and understand the donor database


Minimum bachelor’s degree with prior fundraising experience.


  • Three or more years of professional nonprofit fundraising experience, including annual and major gift-giving.
  • Thorough understanding of direct mail, email, phone, online, social networks, and other development tools.
  • Understanding of pageantry arts, drum corps and/or alumni affairs a plus
  • High energy, positive “can-do” attitude, flexibility, teamwork, and attention to detail
  • Strong verbal and written communications and analytical skills
  • Demonstrated ability to prospect, cultivate, and manage new donors.
  • Strong partnership-building skills, both internal and external.
  • Excellent computer skills and knowledge of office software and development databases.
