USSBA to support bigger 2011 DeMoulin Challenge contest series

More prelims/finals format events planned

The DeMoulin Challenge has proved so successful that the US Scholastic Band Association plans to add to this popular series of band contests.

The success of the series’ first year in 2010 with two shows has led to the expansion of this premier contest format to seven events throughout the fall season.

For over two decades the USSBA has focused on providing positive competitive experiences to bands with finals-only format events. However, some of the more competitive bands in the circuit made it known that they appreciate the added elements a prelims/finals day brings to the experience.

“We work very hard to cater to bands of all levels and we realized we needed to do something extra for those bands who are most engaged in the competitive aspect of the activity” says Courtney Beard, the USSBA staffer involved in some of the early discussions. “The decision was made to support those interests on a limited basis while continuing our regularly programmed events.”

DeMoulin Challenge events are held in high quality venues and are single-day events limited to only 30 bands. Prelims competition is in six groups based upon total membership, with group champions and caption awards. The group champions and next highest scoring bands go on to compete in the 15 band finals for which an overall grand championship is awarded. A post-event critique is available for all participating programs.

The 2011 DeMoulin Challenge Series will be held at the following locations:

  • Oct. 1: Leonard George Stadium, Spring, Texas
  • Oct. 8: Burleson Stadium, Burleson, Texas
  • Oct. 8: Shelton Stadium, Kyle, Texas
  • Oct. 22: Rutgers University, New Brunswick, N.J.
  • Oct. 22: University of Massachusetts, Amherst, Mass.
  • Oct. 29: Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem, N.C.
  • Oct. 30*: J. Birney Crum Stadium, Allentown, Pa.

There is still space available at each event although several are close to capacity. Contact Jon Swengler at for more information about getting your program involved.

Of course the USSBA is proud to continue to present high caliber venues and adjudication to all bands in the 145 traditional format shows hosted in states across the country. Contact the office or visit today to discover an event in your back yard!

*The Oct. 30 DeMoulin Challenge features clinic-style real time reads from adjudicators in addition to sheets and audio feedback
