The US Scholastic Band Association marks the start of the 2011 season with the USSBA North Texas Preview on Sept. 24, 2011.

Previously held at Red Oak High School, with the first show the USSBA will partnering with new co-host, the Midlothian High School Band.

"The good folks at Red Oak high school helped us create this contest, but this winter the mutual decision was made to move venues,” commented USSBA staffer Courtney Beard. “We are very excited to see the Mighty Hawk Band joining us at the new venue.”

The five-year-old Midlothian ISD stadium is regarded as one of the best high school venues in the DFW area. The setting of the field, low and against a natural embankment, provides exceptional acoustics up through the stands and press box.

USSBA Events Manager Larry Harper also expressed enthusiasm about the partnership. “As an educator I am very excited about hosting an early season event in this stadium. Not only is it a gorgeous stadium, it’s design allows directors and staff to have a great read as to exactly where their program stands as they prepare to launch into the season.”

The USSBA has been running early season events in Texas for about five years to better prepare the bands for the larger contests beginning in October, said USSBA Acting Director Rich Hammond. “The idea is that you come out in September with whatever you have finished and we’ll provide a great venue and great judges to give an early idea as to what work lies ahead”

USSBA policy prevents disclosing the exact judging panels, but some USSBA adjudicators who will attend this year’s contests include: Charles Brown of Austin, Texas and David Pickett of Ray township, Mich. as well as George Hopkins, Gerry Miller, Jason Ihnat and Gino Cipriani of the staff of the World Champion Cadets Drum Corps.

The event does not have a participation cap so contact Jon Swengler at 610-821-0345 ext. 113 or via email: Jonathan@YEA.org to find out how you get your program involved in the contest.
