New Braunfels an appealing location

San Antonio-area site tapped for October USSBA showcase

The US Scholastic Band Association and the New Braunfels High School Band scored a home run when they first partnered to run an event in 2010.

For that first event, the newly installed turf field made the 10,000 capacity stadium just north of San Antonio an appealing location to run an event. After last year’s early season show it was clear the partnership was a success.

“The people at New Braunfels are just great,” says Jon Swengler, a USSBA band relations representative who was at the show last year. “They really took the time to make sure everything would not only go smoothly but would be above and beyond expectations. I am really excited to return for this year’s contest.”

The 2011 New Braunfels contest has moved from its 2010 late September date to the USSBA’s Showcase weekend Oct. 1. “Given their location and the bands we hope to attend the contest, moving the date forward was the most logical thing to do,” says USSBA Event Manager Larry Harper. “We hope that the extra week means that more bands will feel ready with their shows and be able to come out and join us at Unicorn Stadium.”

USSBA policy prevents disclosing the exact judging panels, but some USSBA adjudicators who will attend this year’s contests include: Craig Dunn (Lewis Center, Ohio) and Ronnie Pruitt (Austin, Texas) as well as George Hopkins, Gerry Miller, Jason Ihnat and Gino Cipriani of the staff of the World Champion Cadets Drum Corps.

The New Braunfels showcase does not have a participation cap so contact Jon Swengler 610-821-0345 ext. 113 or via email at Jonathan@YEA.org to find out how to get your program involved in the contest.
