Wylie showcase set for Oct. 1

Later date should allow more participation

The US Scholastic Band Association will be returning to the DFW area on Oct. 1 for the USSBA Wylie Showcase. Hosted at Wylie High School’s 10,000 seat stadium the Wylie showcase is entering its second year with the USSBA.

USSBA Band Relations Representative Jon Swengler was at the event last year and says he was a big fan of the event. “The people at Wylie are out-of-this-world great! Everyone from the band director to the band boosters are organized down to the detail. They make for a great, hassle-free day.”

In 2010 the Wylie event was held on the last weekend of September and for 2011 the decision was made to move the event forward to the first weekend of October. “After looking around the region we decided that the later date would provide more bands in the area the opportunity to attend the event,” explains USSBA Event Manager Larry Harper. “It’s a fabulous facility that is easily accessible. I’d like to see this event grow into a serious regional; it really has the potential to be a remarkable event.”

The Wylie showcase is the first opportunity for bands to attend a USSBA event of the 2011 season in the Dallas Fort-Worth area. The DFW metroplex has been an area of recent growth for the USSBA moving from a couple of small events to three in 2010 and four in 2011, including an edition of the USSBA State Championships.

USSBA policy prevents disclosing the exact judging panels, but some USSBA adjudicators who will attend this year’s contests include: Joe Marrella (Marlton, NJ) and Kyle Harvison (Bossier City, LA) as well as George Hopkins, Gerry Miller, Jason Ihnat and Gino Cipriani of the staff of the World Champion Cadets Drum Corps.

The Wylie showcase does not have a participation cap so contact Jon Swengler 610-821-0345 ext. 113 or via Jonathan@YEA.org to find out how you get your program involved in the contest.
