DeMoulin Challenge to revisit Burleson, Texas

Previously site of the USSBA North Texas Regional

In fall 2011, the US Scholastic Band Association will offer the DeMoulin Challenge Series of band contests in the state of Texas.

Previously only available to bands in the Eastern standard time zone, the USSBA has listened to band directors in the Lone Star State and is sponsoring three Texas contests with the desirable prelims-finals format. For the bands in the DFW area the USSBA will be returning to Burleson ISD.

Previously known as the USSBA North Texas Regional the 9-year-old Burleson stadium has been home to one of the most popular USSBA events in the state. It was an easy and logical choice to add the extra dimension to the contest when it was decided a DeMoulin Challenge would be placed in the area of the DFW metroplex.

“I am very excited for the contest,” commented USSBA staffer Courtney Beard, who plans to attend the event. “I’ve worked with the folks in Burleson over the phone and email for the last couple of years and they have been so kind and organized, really making everything simple so the focus can be on the competing bands. This is the first time I get to actually be at their contest and, for me, the anticipation is huge.”

USSBA Event Manager Larry Harper added: “It is a great place for this kind of event. The press box is one of the best for judging that I’ve ever seen. It will allow all the bands to get a real great read.”

Burleson is one of three DeMoulin Challenge events scheduled for the state of Texas and one of seven in the series overall. Other locations include Wake Forest University in North Carolina and Rutgers University in New Jersey.

“We started the DeMoulin Challenge Series in 2010 when we realized an elimination prelims-finals event is what we needed to serve our more competitive bands,” explained USSBA band relations representative Jon Swengler. “Since then it became clear to us that it is also what we need to best serve the bands in Texas. We are fortunate enough to have great hosts like Burleson who can take on hosting these special events.”

USSBA policy prevents disclosing the exact judging panels, but some USSBA adjudicators who will attend this year’s contests include: Tricia Gooley-Rarick (Laurel, Md.) and Marc Sylvester (New York, N.Y.) as well as George Hopkins, Gerry Miller, Jason Ihnat and Gino Cipriani of the staff of the World Champion Cadets Drum Corps.

Each Demoulin Challenge event has a limited number of participation slots so contact Jon Swengler at 610-821-0345 ext. 113 or via email: Jonathan@YEA.org to find out how you get your program involved in the contest.
