YEA seeks bookkeeper/accountant

Position to assist finance manager

Youth Education in the Arts is seeking to hire a full-time bookkeeper/accountant to start immediately.


The successful applicant will manage full cycle accounts receivable, accounts payable, and cash disbursements, including billing. The bookkeeper/accountant assists with banking activities, including deposits and reconciliations.

The position also calls for assisting in preparation of journal entries and reconciliations for monthly general ledger close; assisting in the preparation and distribution of financial statements; assisting the finance manager with external audit examination; assisting with accounting-related reports and general ledger projects, and assisting with special projects assigned by management.

Essential duties and responsibilities

  • Perform accounting functions as assigned including, but not limited to book, reconcile and report administrative, program and event income and expenditures.
  • Assist in preparation of monthly management reports and accompanying schedules. Assist in providing follow-up and documentation of significant variances.
  • Assist with annual external audit. Complete requested materials. Assist in preparing assigned schedules for the audit.
  • Assist with testing for system reports required for management, financial reporting and general ledger reconciliations.
  • Complete deposits and reconciliations for all bank accounts.
  • Coordinate and resolve various issues with bank such as cleared check differences, bank fee anomalies, etc.
  • Conform with and abide by all regulatory guidance and internal policies & procedures.
  • Document policies, procedures and workflow for assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Contribute to department and organization special projects as assigned, including on-site financial management of events (seasonal weekend work required).

Required/preferred qualifications

  • Thorough understanding of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). Knowledge of statutory accounting principles.
  • Strong analytical and bookkeeping skills.
  • Intermediate to advanced experience with Microsoft Excel or similar programs.
  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of accounting software for general ledger accounting.
  • Must be able to effectively handle multiple projects simultaneously in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team and take on new tasks with high level of difficulty.
  • The individual will be expected to take ownership of his or her work product. The individual will work closely with all major functional leaders of the company.


  • Accounting degree (associate's or bachelor's) or equivalent.
  • Responsible experience in accounting.
  • Nonprofit experience is a significant plus.
