USSBA Open Class I & II Nationals Move to Nov. 12-13

Registration Almost Full: Few Slots Remain

In an effort to provide the best possible experience for all bands, students, parents and supporters, the USSBA has moved the Open Class Group I and II national championships to Saturday & Sunday, Nov. 12–13 from its originally scheduled Friday, Nov. 11 date at the Navy & Marine Corps Stadium on the campus of the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.

The USSBA Open Class National Championship schedule now features groups II, IV and V on Saturday, Nov. 12 and groups I, III and VI on Sunday, Nov. 13. Actual group times and performance times will be determined in the near future.

In announcing the slight schedule change, Rich Hammond, USSBA acting director said, “As we got closer to the event, we realized with some creative planning we would be able to accommodate the same number of bands scheduled for the event, but put them on a much more band- and spectator-friendly weekend time frame. Friday has been notoriously difficult with bands having previous football commitments and other scheduling conflicts; this solution allows us to address their needs to provide a better experience for all.”

USSBA Events Manager Larry Harper added, “Logistically, the parking at the Navy & Marine Corps Stadium has always been impacted by the Friday date as we share parking with the state buildings. We now avoid that situation and allow bands to park and warm up all on the paved side of the stadium. As we’ve learned from touring with The Cadets, a simple matter such as parking sometimes can make or break an experience at an event. We want it to be the best of experiences in all ways for participants.”

Jon Swengler, band relations representative said, “The vast majority of bands are appreciative that we can make this adjustment for them. We also know there were a few bands who could not attend the USSBA Championships on a Friday and we welcome them to join us in order to fill out the few remaining performance slots.”
