Urban Arts Center performs at South Mountain Middle School

Xcape and EarthBeats on display at Allentown School

Two of YEA!’s outreach programs created for the talented young people of Allentown had the opportunity to perform for an appreciative audience on Tuesday, Dec. 13 at South Mountain Middle School in Allentown. The hip-hop dance company Xcape joined with the EarthBeats hand drumming programs to show off the work they have been doing since the beginning of the school semester.

Eric Kitchenman, director of YEA!’s Urban Arts Center said, “It is so important for us to showcase the talents of these really great young people. Hour after hour, week after week they work very hard on their routines, and to be able to get them out into the community builds such pride and excitement around the program. We’re just so happy to provide the opportunity for these children and their families.”urbanartsvidstill

The performances by the group of Xcape dancers brought the team to the site of own of their own outreach programs at South Mountain Middle School. The fall semester of the school year has brought with it the creation of a South Mountain team for Xcape as YEA! continues to work with the principal and administration of South Mountain on the ‘Community in Schools’ program which teams organizations such as YEA!, with the schools throughout the Allentown School District.

Moe Jerant, creator of the EarthBeats program in conjunction with YEA!, was on hand to guide the hand drummers through a performance. Kitchenman added, “We couldn’t do half of the things in the world of hand drumming we are attempting without the assistance of Remo. We can’t thank them enough for their support.” EarthBeats has become the newest offering in the hand drumming program which also includes Kids Jam and a Wednesday evening Community Handdruming Project for individuals and families.
