Sophie's Blog: Let them eat cake

"On Wednesdays, we wear pink!"

Wednesday was such a fantastic day! Even though the forecast called for a thunderstorm, I was thrilled that it was a beautiful, sunny day with no rain. After breakfast, I started making cakes for dinner— two vanilla and two chocolate. While I was mixing the first batter, the old hand mixer that I had been using died! Thankfully, someone made a Wal-Mart run and got a new one (a nice Black and Decker one). While I was mixing the icing later, the powdered sugar flew everywhere, got all over my shirt and made a huge mess. But it was a lot of fun! Once the cakes were done and frosted, I used to leftover icing to draw a Cadet logo on each cake and put red and green sprinkles on top.

In honor of the movie Mean Girls, the color guard sported pink shirts, headbands, shorts and socks today. During their sectional, they rehearsed dance choreography for their Christmas-tree-shaped drill (I think it’s in the opener). It’s a Katie Hopkins and Curtis Uhlemann dance, and it’s just amazing! I’m incredibly impressed with this color guard; they are a fabulous group of people. After dancing, they got a quick water break and then picked up their equipment. A rifle line (called the extended rifle line) was mixed with some of the girls from the sabre line, while everyone else was on flag. Their pink clothing went well with the yellow practice flags.

Under the light of the lampposts, the color guard continued to work on dance choreography outside their dorm late into the evening. It’s that dedication and commitment that I'm sure many people, like myself, admire about The Cadets. It’s a valuable life lesson that continues long after a season is over. I’ve said it before, but it’s always true: I love this corps! There is nothing like this experience, and I’m so happy to be a part of it. For holy name shall always be!
