Gorgeous Opening Day for Fall 2012

Four Events Kicked-off Under Clear Skies

The weather could not have been more spectaular for the first weekend of USBands competition which kicked-off Saturday at four sites throughout the Mid-Atlantic.

History was made Saturday as USBands Presented by The Cadets launched as the new brand name, replacing the US Scholastic Band Association (USSBA) moniker which stood as the name of America's largest scholastic service organization since 1997.

Sunny skies and temperatures in the mid-70's made for a perfect combination as over 40 high school marching bands brought their 2012 productions to the competition field for the first time this year.

The season began in Great Mills, Md. early in the afternoon with a day-time competition, while events on Saturday evening in Edison, NJ., Souderton, Pa. and Danbury, Conn. took the wraps off of the season in these states.

Souderton HS in Souderton, Pa. hosted the first USBands event of 2012 in Pennsylvania on Opening Night of the 2012 season. Nine bands took to the field in a wide array of Open and A Class competition, capped off by a featured performance by the Kutztown University Marching Band.

Riverside HS (NJ) and Pen Argyl HS (Pa.) kicked off the event in 1A competition before the Northampton HS (Pa.) band took the field in Group 3A. Pennridge HS (A) from neighboring Perkasie, Pa. performed an entertaining show based on the music of Steely Day to wrap up the first half of the event in Group 5A.

William Penn HS from Wilmington, DE made their very first appearance ever in USBands competition, sharing Group 3 Open with Burlginton City HS (NJ). Former Group 4 Open Nazareth HS (Pa.) has another strong program; they swept all capions in their group and posted the highest score of the evening.

Host Souderton HS impressed the hometown crowd with a contemporary, Spanish-flavored production which was well received by guest bands and fans alike. Lastly, the Kutztown University Band blew the socks off of the marching band members by performing their entire 2012 program to the visitors stands, where several hundred marching band students danced, cheered and clapped along with KU's Marching Unit's entertaining performance.

Watch for scores, photos and more details to be posted during and after the events as part of USBands all-new "Media Makers" project.
