Cadets Family Gathering: New Jersey Chapter

New Jersey Chapter Alumni laughed and reminisced in Garfield Friday night

Great conversation and story telling highlighted the evening, as the North Jersey Chapter of the Garfield Cadets Alumni met last Friday night at the Most Holy Name Church in Garfield, NJ. Cindi DeVivo, a member of the 1969 Hall of Fame Color Guard and president of the chapter, was pleased with the attendance and “thankful to Monsignor Reilly for allowing us to meet in this historic parish where the Holy Name Cadets were formed in 1934.”

The meeting was an opportunity for everyone to catch up after the summer and several alumni shared stories from their time as Cadets. Pat Vazquez, who marched from 1961 through 1967, told the story of how he started out as a rifle, moved on to play in the drumline and then was made drum major.

Greg Cinzio, member from 1967 through 1977, laughed as he recalled accidentally spilling jelly on Bill “Chief” Kemmerer at a rehearsal.

And 1969 Hall of Fame Guard Captain Denise Kolbusz talked about a time when the corps was touring in the South and she had to protect her guard girls from the palmetto bugs. Everyone had a good laugh from all the stories and enjoyed pizza from Santoni’s in Garfield.

Cadets alumnus, Assistant Director and Tour Manager Patrick Duncan attended and discussed upcoming camps and recruiting, which he said are going very well. Brad Martin was there as well and talked about the upcoming Cadets campaigns.

The next chapter event is the Fourth Annual Alumni Christmas Party, to be held on December 7 from 7:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. at the Preakness Hill Country Club in Wayne, NJ. You can find out more information about the party by emailing Cindi DeVivo at
