This week's Employee of the Week is Gary Seifert, the new Volunteer Coordinator here at Youth Education in the Arts. Gary has been around this activity for many years, and he's a valuable addition to the team!

What did you do in drum corps?
Drum major with the Reading Buccaneers in 1975
Marched guard with the Bucs in 1977
Guard caption, Cadets 1979

What did you do in marching band?
Sax player, then drum major my senior year of high school. Nothing in college.

Who's your favorite music person, living or dead, real or fictional?
Larry Fast (Synergy), the true grandfather of electronic music

What's the best meal you've eaten? What was it and where?
Anything at Buca De Beppo's

In one sentence, what do you actually do all day in your job?
I create unique ways to find, train and support qualified volunteers to assist YEA! in molding magnificent human beings through their participation in the arts.

What was your first job?
Paperboy, Easton Express

What's the last thing you saw in the movies?
Waterhorse

Do you give money to panhandlers?
As often as I can.

Whats your drink at Starbucks?
Double shot mocha

What's your drink at the local bar?
Regular iced tea!

How often do you prepare your own meals?
Once in a while. My wife is an amazing cook!

What's your favorite cereal?
Honey toasted oats

What's hanging above your sofa?
A 2D hand stitched floral arrangement. Not made by me!

How much is too much to spend on a haircut?
I am going bald, so……. not a pressing issue.

When's bedtime?
10 p.m. when possible.

Have you been to NYC? Which do you prefer, the old Times Square or the new Times Square?
Appreciated the old but love the new.

How about Broadway? What have you loved?
Les Mis. Period.

What do you think of American Idol?
Once in a while I watch, if the talent is exceptional. Last year, Phillip Phillips floored me. Wow, he has it!

Do you prefer fiction or non-fiction? What was the last book you read?
Non-fiction usually. But I can not resist America's greatest literary treasure, Dave Barry!! Just finished his I'll Mature When I'm Dead.

Who is your mortal enemy?
Nasty roosters. (We raise chickens.)
Or Justin Bieber. Same hair.

When's the last vacation you took? Where did you go?
Last summer we took a  week at a CT beach.

Do you Facebook? What do you like about it?
Addicted. Helps me find old acquaintances so I can apologize for being such a jerk when I met them many years ago.

Job Description:
The volunteer manager supervises and recruits volunteers and provides direction, coordination and consultation for all volunteer functions within YEA!.

It’s Gary’s job to:

  • Schedule all volunteer activity, in association with department managers
  • Maintain volunteer service descriptions for each volunteer assignment
  • Ensure volunteers are staffed to support the various areas of operations, to include band events, community activities, Cadets camps , Spring Training, the summer tour, fund raising activities, summer exhibits and education, special events,  development, and office events
  • Recommend the most efficient use of volunteers, appropriate volunteer/supervisory mix, and future workforce needs to support volunteer program operations
  • Conduct and/or arrange for volunteer orientation and training
  • Develop and manage volunteer policies, procedures, and standards of volunteer service
  • Assess customer feedback received through comment forms
  • Organize and participate in volunteer recognition programs and special events
  • Evaluate all aspects of volunteer programs to ensure effectiveness and to recommend/implement changes as appropriate
  • Provide ongoing support and guidance for volunteers
  • Act as a single point of contact for communications
