Cadets Couples: Ken and Cheryl Koehler

Ken and Cheryl met in the Garfield Cadets in 1976

Koehler22.jpgKen Koehler joined the Garfield Cadets in 1974 along with several friends from Hackensack, NJ, after their previous corps, Doremus Drum and Bugle Corps, folded.

Cheryl auditioned for Garfield’s colorguard in the fall of 1975. “I joined with my good pal Joani Cantaluppi Meisner,” she said. “We were originally going to join the Muchachos, but then decided on the Cadets.”

Cheryl said she had the honor of being the flag bearer in the portrayal of Iwo Jima during her first summer in the corps, 1976.

Koehler1.jpgIn 1977, the Garfield Cadets’ show ended with the colorguard laying down their traditional equipment and playing sopranos as part of the hornline. In July of that same summer, Ken and Cheryl started dating. The two marched together again the next summer, Ken’s age-out, in 1978.

They were married three years after they started dating, in July of 1980, and ultimately moved to Cincinnati, OH, for Ken’s engineering job. They have lived in Cincinnati for 33 years.

“I am a retired art teacher, and Ken is a chemical engineer with Jedson Engineering,” Cheryl said.

Ken and Cheryl Koehler have one son, Stephen, 23, who is also a chemical engineer working for Cintas in Cincinnati. “My guys enjoy fantasy football, Nascar and NY Ranger hockey, while I enjoy reading, card making and quilting,” Cheryl said. Stephen and his fiancé, Lauren, will be married this June.
