Cadets Wedding: Rosemary and Orlando

Another couple of Cadets got married this month

Orlando and Rosemary Mastrapa met during their first year in The Cadets in 2006.

Dean Broadbent and Emma Roberts often showed their Flanagan students videos of The Cadets, which gradually inspired Rosemary to pursue drum corps.

“It was always a dream of mine to be good enough to march with such a reputable corps,” she said. “Emma always encouraged me to march Cadets, and she had a huge impact on my decision to finally go for it.”

After graduating high school, Rosemary joined Braddock Independent Winterguard, sponsored by Miami Youth Inc., where she met several more Cadets members and teachers. “At Braddock it became more of a reality than a dream,” Rosemary said. “In 2006, I auditioned and became a Cadet.”

During his sophomore year of high school in 2003, Orlando marched with the Magic of Orlando, where he was taught by (now) Cadets Brass Caption Supervisor Gino Cipriani and Cadets alumnus and brass instructor Chad Pence. He also became friends with many of the people he would march with in The Cadets.

“In the fall of 2005, I was contacted by Jason ‘Paco’ Nunez, who I had marched with at Magic of Orlando,” Orlando said. Paco told him he needed to audition for The Cadets' tuba section. “Between his convincing and my understanding of The Cadets’ history of excellence, it wasn't long before I had purchased my plane ticket and downloaded the audition packet,” Orlando said.

He met Rosemary just a few months later.

“We ran into each other after an April camp in the airport,” Rosemary said. “A bunch of us were all on the same flight.”

They became friends during the 2006 summer, but it wasn't until a South Florida drum corps get-together after the summer that they started dating. Just a little less than seven years after they met, Orlando and Rosemary got married on Saturday, February 9, 2013.

Their gorgeous venue is located in a historical theater in South Florida, and many Cadets alumni and other former drum corps members were in attendance. Christen Fleming, a Cadets alumnus and former instructor who’s also married to a fellow Cadet, designed their wedding invitations.

“Our pastor was familiar with drum corps and was a drum major for his high school,” Rosemary said. “His wife was a baton twirler at the same school. Our wedding was a dream come true.”

Congratulations to Orlando and Rosemary!
