From C2 to The Cadets

Two members of Cadets2's inaugural season made the jump to The Cadets in 2013

In the past year, The Cadets have shared more with Cadets2 than just a uniform: At the end of the 2012 DCI season, a few members of The Cadets finished out the summer filling holes in Cadets2.

And now, a year later, the reverse has happened. The Cadets have found themselves with a couple of members from Cadets2’s inaugural season, colorguard member Devin Eppley being one.

devinlettley_c2.jpegLast year, joining Cadets2 was simply a matter of familiarity for Devin. He knew the guard caption head, who ended up recruiting a lot of guard members for the inaugural season.

It was also a matter of feasibility. Devin previously marched with the Hawthorne Caballeros, which was a four-hour drive from home to Shermans Dale, Pa.

“I thought, ‘Hey, it's closer than where I was,’" he said. “Cadets2 was a lot easier, and it was a good experience, so I'm glad I did it.”

And it was when he went to the combined Cadets/Cadets2 camp in November that he was approached with the opportunity to spin with The Cadets in 2013.

“In a way, it's a lot easier than DCA — a lot more than I expected,” Devin said about his season with The Cadets so far. “It's a lot nicer, because you're not traveling back and forth all the time, spending money.”

He said he likes that on a DCI tour, you’re more or less in one spot: on the bus. It’s where you live, and your stuff is always with you. You don’t have to worry about anything else.

“It's a lot better than I expected it to be,” Devin said.

He didn’t come over alone, however. Baritone player Alex Bauer also made the jump from Cadets2 to The Cadets. His story will be published later this summer.
