Rehearsal day in Bethlehem

The corps got some much needed time off from competing on Saturday.

“Oh, we didn’t have a show last night.”

That was my thought as I sat down this morning to compile today’s update. So rather than putting up a post that includes fan photos and reactions from Facebook and Twitter, it turns out I actually have to write an update.

It was an easy mistake to make, thinking The Cadets competed in a show last night. Not only are we coming off three straight days of contests, but the corps did attend last night’s show at J. Birney Crum Stadium — as spectators.

Backing up a bit, though, we got off to a bit of a late start on Saturday. There’s a story going around that after Zack Travis woke up the corps at 9:30 a.m., a member rushed up to him and exclaimed, “Zack! We overslept!”

In actuality, they slept in due to the rainstorm passing through the area.

But even with the extra sleep, that didn’t mean we missed the rain entirely. Most of the morning block took place during a steady rain. It wasn’t until the corps headed into sectionals that the rain finally let up for good.

That thankfully gave Cody the Roadie and his crew time to work on the props. Given how the guard interacts with the props toward the end of the show, it was realized that the frames needed to be painted. The roadies and volunteer Steve Woodward worked tirelessly throughout the day to get all 16 props finished.

Meanwhile, as that work was being done, the corps and staff headed to J. Birney Crum to catch the last block of night two of DCI East. I’m sure the members appreciated the experience. It’s probably been a while since any of them have been on the spectator side of things.

But soon enough they were back on the bus and then back on a gym floor, most likely thinking about the last seven days left of tour.
