From C2 to The Cadets

A tradition spanning two drum corps

In the past year, The Cadets have shared more with Cadets2 than just a uniform: On their 80th tour in 2013, The Cadets found themselves with a couple of members from Cadets2’s inaugural season, colorguard member Devin Eppley being one.

devinlettley_c2.jpegLast year, joining Cadets2 was simply a matter of familiarity for Devin. He knew the guard caption head, who ended up recruiting a lot of guard members for the inaugural season.

It was also a matter of feasibility. Devin previously marched with the Hawthorne Caballeros, which was a four-hour drive from home to Shermans Dale, Pa.

“I thought, ‘Hey, it's closer than where I was,’ " he said. “Cadets2 was a lot easier, and it was a good experience, so I'm glad I did it.”

DevinCadets2013_pole_jigglestick.jpgAfter completing his first season in Cadets2 and finishing fifth overall at the DCA World Championships with the corps' 2012 production, Launch, Devin decided to attend the combined Cadets/Cadets2 audition camp last November. It was there that he was approached with the opportunity to spin with The Cadets in 2013.

And spin he did. Not only did The Cadets introduce (and scale) 10-foot towers in 2013, the corps also debuted three new forms of colorguard equipment -- the loop, the hook and the bolt -- as well as flexible poles in the ballad (affectionately known to the colorguard as "Jiggle Sticks") (right).

In terms of the logistical differences between the corps, Devin said that he likes that on a DCI tour, you’re more or less in one spot: on the bus. It’s where you live, and your stuff is always with you. You don’t have to worry about anything else.

“In a way, it's a lot easier than DCA -- a lot more than I expected,” he said. “It's a lot better than I expected it to be, and it's nice because you're not traveling back and forth all the time, spending money.”

Congratulations to Devin on a fantastic summer with The Cadets in their 2013 production, Side by Side. The corps finished third overall at the DCI World Campionships on Saturday, August 10, 2013.
