Event Recap: The Texas Yamaha Cup

A report on our new Texas event

The stadium lights were lit before sunrise and stayed on until almost midnight in Converse, Texas this past Saturday, October 26, at the 2013 Texas Yamaha Cup.

The success of the annual USBands Yamaha Cup at MetLife Stadium in E. Rutherford, N.J. led to the addition of another Yamaha-sponsored event -- this time in Texas, with a twist. This was a two-part show featuring an earlier Preliminary Competition followed by a Final Competition in the evening.

"The concourse at D.W. Rutledge Stadium had a certain air of electricity felt by everyone throughout the day," said New York native Darren Delaney, USBands' merchandise sales manager. "As the bands came through wearing either their uniforms or their band shirts, the band moms were dressed with their own sense of flair. One school, Wagner, showed up with what seemed like an entire bus-load of parents all decked out in coordinated outfits. What an excellent way to show your team spirit in the stands. The parents seemed to enjoy being a part of the event just as much as the performers," Darren said.

In this prelims/finals show, the first-place bands in each group automatically advanced to the Texas Yamaha Cup Finals. From there, the overall scores from the Preliminary Competition determined the remaining 10 finalist bands.

Once in critique after Prelims, each finalist band director randomly drew their finals performance slot out of a hat, mixing up the rankings and group sizes for this special “all-skate” finals event.
