Cadets Team Gets Closer to Show

As winter rehearsals continue, the 2014 program begins to come into focus

Long ago in the city of Hackensack, N.J., George Hopkins and Marc Sylvester would sit and talk about what drum corps would be like in the future when amplification was allowed.

Then, when the time came for amplification in 2005, the decision was made to push the envelope a bit, and The Cadets brought The Zone to the football field. It was a big hit and a championship show, and the door was opened to Part 2, This I Believe, and so on.

Of course, the two haven't worked together since 2006, but for the summer of 2014, George and Marc are again discussing show concepts.lincolnportraitalbum

Now, Marc and Hop once again spend hours in conversation, along with Greg Lagola, Jay Bocook, Jeff Sacktig and the entire team. And without question, with an eye to The Cadets' history with the music of Copland, “Lincoln Portrait” is a clear choice. How can it not be? When you ask Hop and Marc how they let it sit so long, they both grow silent.

For those who are curious, Mr. Lincoln will not be subject of the entire 2014 show, but the work looks to be the centerpiece of a show that could be called, This Is What They Said.

As for the music, “Lincoln Portrait," “Appalachian Spring" and “Red Pony" are under consideration, as well as, “Swing, Swing, Swing," music from the soundtrack of the movie Pollock, and even a Beatles tune.

At rehearsal last weekend, we spoke with Wayne Harris, the newest member of The Cadets Design Team, about the vocal contribution to this year's production. In this video, hear some insight from both Wayne Harris and Director George Hopkins about the current plans for The Cadets' 2014 program, inspired by some of our nations greatest leaders and the music of American composer Aaron Copland.
