The Inaugural USBands Eastern Concert Band Festival

A groundbreaking concert festival offers opportunity to perform on world-class stage

As drumlines and colorguards take the floor in winter competition, Team USBands is pleased to announce the Inaugural USBands Eastern Concert Band Festival, an opportunity for concert band this spring that will open a new chapter in the organization’s contribution to music education.

On Friday, May 30, 2014, 18 bands will take the stage at Verizon Hall at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, home of the world-renowned Philadelphia Orchestra, to perform in a groundbreaking, all-day festival and clinic hosted by USBands.

“Much like our very first competition at MetLife Stadium back in 1988, this concert festival is groundbreaking for both USBands and the Kimmel Center,” said Larry Markiewicz, USBands’ Adjudication and Education Liaison, and a long-time music educator in his own right. “We hope it will be the first of many concert clinics on world-class stages.”

As with its fall and winter events, USBands will offer only the very best in educational performance adjudication in the concert-band setting. Bands are invited to perform a 20- to 30-minute selection on stage at Verizon Hall in front of friends, parents, and a panel of four world-class music educators specializing in wind ensemble.

“We are thrilled to have the opportunity to expand our service to bands beyond the football field and the gym,” Director Justin Heimbecker said. “With a focus on venue, feedback and service, the team here at USBands can't wait to bring a MetLife-caliber experience to the concert stage, and we look forward to creating this opportunity in other major cities as well in 2015.”

Adjudicators will provide positive, constructive digital commentary geared towards both students and directors, and performance ratings will also be available based on each band director’s discretion.

After their performance, each band will adjourn to a private room off-stage and spend an additional 20 to 30 minutes with a guest clinician who will offer some advice based on their performance and guide them through some of the music.

A special USBands Performer's Package will be presented to each student, including a professionally produced audio CD of their performance, a professional group photograph, a program booklet and a USBands Eastern Concert Band Festival T-shirt.

The cost of the festival is $79 per student for USBands member schools and $89 per student for USBands non-members. Interested directors are encouraged to register early, as space is limited to 18 bands. Upon completion of the registration form, a deposit of 25 percent is due by February 15, with final payment due by April 15.

To register additional bands from your school or district, please contact Larry Markiewicz at for information on discounted pricing.

Any bands that register after all 18 performances slots are filled will be placed on a waiting list in order of their application.

For family, friends and supporters, tickets to the Inaugural USBands Eastern Concert Band Festival will be $25, but will be sold to each participating band for $20 to be used as a fundraiser for their program.

Students may also purchase lunch at the Kimmel Center, and a special VIP hospitality area will be available to band directors and staff for refreshments.
